حمایت اجتماعی به عنوان شبکه حمایتی به سیستمی با دامنه بزرگ تا کوچک از افراد اشاره دارد که زمان نیاز به کمک، قابل دسترس باشند. حمایت اجتماعی به صورت حمایت دریافتی و ادراک شده مفهوم سازی می¬شود. حمایت اجتماعی دریافتی، اعمالی را در بر می¬گیرد که به وسیله اعضای شبکه¬ی اجتماعی انجام می¬شود تا به فردی که نیاز دارد، کمک شود. حمایت اجتماعی ادراک شده، مفهومی است که به ارزیابی¬های ذهنی افراد درباره¬ی روابط و رفتارهای حمایتی اشاره دارد (ژانگ و همکاران ، 2018).امروزه حمایت اجتماعی به عنوان یکی از مهمترین تسهیل کننده¬های رفتار بهداشتی مورد توجه می¬باشد. حمایت اجتماعی، حمایت قابل پذیرش از طرف افراد دیگر، گروه¬ها و جامعه بزرگ¬تر است. حمایت اجتماعی به عنوان قوی¬ترین و نیرومندترین نیروی مقابله¬ای برای مواجهه¬ی موفقیت آمیز و آسان فرد در زمان درگیری با شرایط تنش¬زاست و تحمل مشکلات را برای بیماران تسهیل می¬کند (یوسز و همکاران، 2019). ژیانگ (2020) حمایت اجتماعی را این گونه تعریف می¬کنند: «منابع اجتماعی که افراد غیر حرفه¬ای چه در بافت گروه¬های حامی رسمی و چه روابط یاری رسان غیر رسمی در دسترس فرد قرار می¬دهند». دیگر محققان حمایت اجتماعی را تبادلات بین فردی می¬دانند که شامل عاطفه، تأیید و تصدیق، مساعدت و یاری، تشویق و اعتبار دادن به احساسات است. تعاریف متعدد درباره¬ی ¬حمایت اجتماعی نشان می¬دهد که این مفهوم دارای انواع ابزاری، هیجانی، اطلاعاتی و ملموس است (تیان و همکاران ، 2021).
