ازدواج، نکاح یا پیوند زناشویی پیمانی است که به‌موجب آن به شکل عمومی یک زن و مرد باهم شریک و متحد می‌شوند و خانواده‌ای را تشکیل می‌دهند. در واقع هدف ازدواج تشکیل خانواده است که تمایل به این امر در نهاد انسان گذاشته شده‌است. ازدواج به روابط جنسی مشروعیت می‌بخشد. به طور سنتی، ازدواج نقشی اساسی در حفظ اخلاق و تمدن دارد (لامپیس و همکاران، 2019). مردم‌شناسان برای این‌که تنوع وسیع اعمال زناشویی مشاهده‌شده از سوی فرهنگ را در نظر بگیرند چندین تعریف رقابتی از ازدواج پیشنهاد کرده‌اند. ادوارد وست‌مارک در کتابش با عنوان «تاریخ ازدواج انسان (۱۹۲۱)» ازدواج را به این صورت تعریف می‌کند: ارتباط پردوام یا کم‌دوام نر و ماده گذشته از عمل زادآوری محض تا بعد از تولد فرزند «.او در کتاب» آینده‌ ازدواج در تمدن وسترن «تعریف پیشین‌اش را رد می‌کند و در عوض بطور موقت ازدواج را این‌گونه تعریف می‌کند: «رابطه‌ یک یا تعداد بیشتری مرد با یک یا تعداد بیشتری زن که بوسیله‌ عرف یا قانون پذیرفته شده‌است». یادداشت‌ها و جستجوها (۱۹۵۱)، کتابچه‌ راهنمای انسان‌شناسی، ازدواج را چنین تعریف کرده‌است، «پیوندی بین یک زن و یک مرد به‌طوری‌که بچه‌های متولد شده از زن به عنوان فرزندان مشروع هر دوی والدین شناخته شوند.» در راستای رویه‌ معمول در میان مردم ساکن قبایل جنوب سودان و غرب اتیوپی که به زن‌ها اجازه می‌داد در شرایط خاص در نقش شوهر عمل کنند، کاتلین گوگ (انسان‌شناس بریتانیایی) پیشنهاد داد که آن تعریف را به این صورت تغییر دهند که «یک زن و یک یا چند شخص دیگر» (کیم و همکاران، 2020).
